I
started playing piano when I was about 7. My parents had me take piano
lessons for a couple of years. When I got bored with the drills,
I started to write my own music. One of my piano teachers wisely made
me write out the songs I made up. When I was eleven, I took a guitar
class from and old hippy in Santa Barbara. This guy had an electric
guitar that he'd nailed together from scraps of plywood with a fender neck attached. At the time I
thought it was cool-but I wonder now how the thing actually played and sounded. I continued making up tunes, eventually
coming up with some halfway respectable things that could be called songs.
My early influences were pretty much in the popular genre of the day: Elton John,
the Eagles, Jackson Browne. Eventually I discovered more progressive
and heavier guitar oriented music and began listening to bands like Kansas, Pink Floyd, Dream
Theater, and Yes. I've experimented with recording since I was old enough
to work a tape recorder. My first recordings were done by dubbing from one cassette player to another.
The sound quality was enough to induce vomiting... and the songs...well...
I'd like to think I've improved with age. When I was in high school I borrowed
a four track reel to reel from a friend and got to experience decent sound
quality. I eventually got my own 4 track reel to reel that I now use as
a conversation piece (yes, it still works). I've built a few computer based
systems and now use Sonar for my studio work.
I currently am on staff at Antelope Springs Church where I serve as a Worship leader.
I've been happily married for 30 years and am the proud father of two outstanding and
talented sons, Keith and Thom MacMillan.
Here's a shot of my home studio- where we occasionally record rehearsals and I work on projects for various clients: |
